‘Moments of Inspiration’ – 4 Success Stories

thinking1Deciding what to do in life is best done when based on inspiration. From that idea spark you can then create a strategic action plan to carry out the inspiration you have received. You must act on the inspiration or your chances of achieving success are very limited.

While watching a video on the Oprah Winfrey Life Class, I was struck by the stories she shared of famous people, including herself, who received just such inspiration. Following are the specific examples of moments of brilliant insight received  by Actor Jim Carrey, Oprah, Writer J.K. Rowling and Inventor Sara Blakely.

Jim Carrey – Was inspired to write a check to himself for $10 million for “acting services rendered” to be received within 5 years and kept it in his wallet. He visualized this happening everyday. He got inspiration from sitting atop Mulholland Drive in Hollywood and visualizing directors being interested in him, respecting his work and making deals with him. He received $10 million for the movie Dumb and Dumber just before the Thanksgiving 1995 deadline.

Oprah – Was standing at the clothesline watching her grandmother hang the laundry and telling Oprah to watch because someday she would have to do it for herself. Oprah said it was a quiet, still, cold morning and the inspiration came to her that this would not be her life. She was 4 or 5 years old. She said she held onto this belief for many years and knew there was something more for her. And we all know the amazing impact Oprah has had on the world as a television icon.

J.K. Rowling – Was inspired on the train one day at age 25 with the idea of the Harry Potter character; boy doesn’t know he is a wizard and goes to wizarding school. Then “bang, bang, bang” her head was flooding with ideas for the wizard school and all the details. She said she felt so excited! While thinking of Harry Potter, she also heard a voice say  “one day every child in the world would know his name”.  J.K. Rowling is the world’s first self-made billionaire author.

Sara Blakely – Had come up with the idea to create panty hose with no toes based on her own frustrations with the typical panty hose model. She forged ahead with her idea, tried to get it manufactured, and wondered if the effort was going to pay off. She asked for a sign to know if she should continue on with her belief she was supposed to start this business. Sara plopped down on her couch, turned on the Oprah show and there was Oprah talking about cutting off her panty hose to wear sandals! The moment she pulled up her pant leg to show the audience her dilemma, Sara had the blinding moment of inspiration in which she knew-that she knew-that she knew to go for it! Sara Blakely is a billionaire businesswoman and designer of Spanx.

Inspiration is the magic ingredient that will fuel your belief that what you are doing is what the world needs. Once you have that belief, add passion and persistence and a very strategic plan of action to achieve the success you want. It has worked for me and I am sure it will work for you, too.
