Seahawks SEE Their Way to Success!

With the Seahawks spectacular win yesterday over the Broncos, I am struck by words I heard  the last two years from two NFC West quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick. As I listened closely to interviews of both QBs prior to the Super Bowl, one in 2013 and one this year 2014, I heard them mention one of my absolute favorite topics; The Power to Visualize Success.

Last year, the San Francisco 49ers were in the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens. The pre-game interview with Colin Kaepernick revealed some very interesting facts and inspiring circumstances. Colin Kaepernick was adopted and his adoptive parents were featured in the interview, proudly reading a letter that Colin had written to himself as a child. Kaepernick had predicted in 4th grade that he would play as a quarterback in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers or the 49ers, that he would be 6″2″ and weigh 140 pounds. His prediction came true (except he weighs 160 pounds) and is a fantastic testament to the power of clarity, writing down your goals and continually focusing to achieve them.

Now for the interesting part: In the pre-game show before Super Bowl 47, an interviewer asked Colin Kaepernick if he visualized himself winning the Super Bowl, to which he shrugged shyly with a childlike grin, shook his head side to side and said coyly, “Nawww…” Bingo!

He could see himself in the NFL as a quarterback, but he DID NOT see himself winning “The Big Show”. I took note of this telling revelation and was not surprised when the 49ers did not achieve victory. “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe he can achieve”, as stated by Napoleon Hill in his classic book Think and Grow Rich was the principle at work. I have known this classic truth for years and have seen it play out in my life over and over and over.

Let’s contrast this to Russell Wilson.  An enlightening story by Alyssa Roenigk appeared in ESPN The Magazine on Sept. 2, 2013 that illustrates this principle really well, and made me smile to see it at work with my home state team, the Seattle Seahawks. Highlighted was Pete Carroll’s new approach to coaching an NFL team and included the Seahawks using relaxation and visualization techniques to achieve success on the football field. The article states high-performance sports psychologist Mike Gervais “is about to lead a meditation session and, as he always does, instructs the players to hit record on their phone voice-recorder apps and to close their eyes. Then he starts guiding them: ‘Quiet your minds,’ ‘Focus your attention inwardly’ and ‘Visualize success.’ ”

And with the Seahawks Super Bowl win 43-8 over the Broncos, we know it’s working! Russell Wilson has been using this technique to set and achieve goals all throughout his life. As seen in The Rob Report, Russell has a list of goals posted on his locker. He has said in interviews he was taught by his father to always believe in himself. AND he sees himself and his team not just winning one Super Bowl, but multiple Super Bowls! And this vision began even before he became a starting quarterback.

The ESPN article quotes Wilson as saying, “I truly believe in positive synergy, that your positive mindset gives you a more hopeful outlook, and belief that you can do something great means you will do something great. I believed that before I got here, and the crazy thing is, Coach Carroll and our football team believe it too.”
